Week 10: AI for Reading, Language, and Study Skills

Welcome to Week 10 of the AI Literacy Course.

In Lesson 8, we explored AI as a general study partner. In Lesson 9, we used connected questions to examine reasoning.

This week, we focus on reading and language.

AI can help learners preview a text, explain difficult language, generate questions, compare translations, and provide writing feedback. These forms of support can improve access and participation.

However, generated material should not hide whether the learner understood and engaged with the source.

The central principle is:

Use AI to support access to the text, but do not let generated material become your only source when the learning task requires engagement with the original.

Learning goals

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  • Set a clear purpose for reading

  • Preview a source text without inventing its content

  • Read in manageable chunks and annotate in their own words

  • Retrieve and summarise before comparing with AI

  • Distinguish literal, inferential, and critical questions

  • Build vocabulary in context

  • Compare translation choices critically

  • Request writing feedback without losing voice or authorship

  • Check permissions, AI output, and learning through a fresh task



1. Use AI around the source text

The source text is the article, chapter, excerpt, transcript, or other material being studied.

AI may help learners:

  • prepare for reading;

  • understand difficult vocabulary;

  • examine sentence structure;

  • ask questions about a supplied passage;

  • compare possible interpretations;

  • practise using ideas from the text;

  • receive feedback on their own response.

AI should not become a hidden replacement for the source when the assignment requires reading and analysing it.

If a learner reads only an AI summary, important features may disappear:

  • the author’s reasoning;

  • supporting evidence;

  • uncertainty;

  • limitations;

  • examples;

  • structure;

  • tone and voice.

Access support is not the same as replacement

Some learners may appropriately use:

  • a simplified preview;

  • translation support;

  • text-to-speech;

  • a glossary;

  • adapted formatting;

  • explanations of difficult sentences.

These tools can provide access to the source.

The learner should still know:

  • what came from the source;

  • what AI simplified, translated, or generated;

  • where meaning may have changed;

  • which important passages need direct checking.

The goal is meaningful engagement, not removal of every support tool.

2. Before reading: Set a purpose and preview

Set a reading purpose

A reading purpose directs attention.

Before reading, ask:

  • Why am I reading this text?

  • What should I understand afterwards?

  • Am I looking for the main argument, evidence, concepts, structure, vocabulary, or practical application?

  • What question should this text help me answer?

Example:

“I am reading this article to identify the author’s main claim, two supporting pieces of evidence, and one limitation.”

A purpose should guide attention without becoming so narrow that unexpected but important ideas are ignored.

Activate prior knowledge

Before reading, write briefly:

  • what you already know;

  • what you think the text may contain;

  • what you want to learn;

  • what you are uncertain about.

An optional tool is K-W-L:

  • K: What do I already know?

  • W: What do I want to know?

  • L: What did I learn?

Prior knowledge may contain misunderstandings. Predictions are ideas to test against the source, not facts to defend.

Preview honestly

Headings, abstracts, captions, images, highlighted terms, and tables of contents can help a learner predict how a text is organised.

Example prompt:

“Based only on these headings, create three questions I can use while reading. Do not describe content that is not shown.”

If AI has received only a title or list of headings, it cannot honestly know the full text.

It may predict likely content, but predictions must be clearly labelled.

3. During reading: Read in chunks and annotate

Long or difficult texts can overload attention. Reading in manageable chunks can help.

After each paragraph or section, record:

  • the main point;

  • one supporting detail;

  • one question;

  • one unfamiliar word;

  • one connection to earlier knowledge.

These notes are called annotations.

Annotations should normally be written in the learner’s own words. This encourages attention and reveals what the learner understood.

If AI creates all the annotations first, the learner may accept them without processing the text.

Use focused support

When a sentence is difficult, ask for limited help.

For example:

“Explain this sentence in plain language. Keep the technical term ‘photosynthesis’ in parentheses and do not add facts that are not in the sentence.”

Another useful prompt is:

“Divide this sentence into smaller parts and explain how the parts are connected.”

After receiving help, return to the source sentence and compare it with the explanation.

Ask:

  • Was the central meaning preserved?

  • Was uncertainty removed?

  • Did AI add information?

  • Can I now explain the sentence myself?

4. After reading: Retrieve and summarise

Retrieval means recalling information before looking at the source again.

A useful process is:

  1. Read one section.

  2. Close or hide the text.

  3. Write the main points from memory.

  4. Reopen the text.

  5. Mark omissions, distortions, and unsupported additions.

  6. Revise the summary.

  7. Compare with an AI summary only when useful.

This process shows what the learner remembered and understood.

Different uses of summaries

A summary may be used in different ways.

Preview summary:
Provides orientation before reading.

Study summary:
Supports review after the learner has engaged with the source.

Substitute summary:
Is used instead of reading material that the learner is expected to examine.

Preview and study summaries can be useful. A substitute summary may hide whether the learner encountered the author’s evidence and reasoning.

Check an AI summary

When comparing an AI summary with the source, ask:

  • Does it represent the main claim accurately?

  • Does it include the most important evidence?

  • Does it preserve uncertainty and qualifications?

  • Does it confuse the author’s view with background information?

  • Does it omit a relevant limitation?

  • Does it introduce information not found in the source?

A shorter summary will always leave something out. The important question is whether it leaves out something essential for the reading purpose.

5. Ask text-grounded questions

A text-grounded question is connected to evidence in a supplied passage.

Three useful question types are:

InferentialWhat reasonable conclusion follows from clues in the text?
CriticalHow strong, relevant, or complete is the text’s support?

Literal questions

Literal questions ask about information stated directly.

Example:

“What reason does the author give for the increase?”

The answer should be located in the source.

Inferential questions

Inferential questions ask the learner to draw a reasonable conclusion from clues in the text.

Example:

“What can we infer about the author’s attitude from the examples selected?”

An inference is not a direct quotation. It should be supported by evidence from the text.

Critical questions

Critical questions examine the quality of the reasoning or evidence.

Example:

“Does the evidence support the author’s broad conclusion, or only a narrower claim?”

A useful prompt is:

“Using only the passage I provide, ask me one literal question, one inferential question, and one critical question. Ask one at a time. For each answer, identify the sentence or paragraph that provides support. If the answer is not available in the passage, say so. Do not add outside facts unless they are clearly labelled.”

AI may claim that something appears in a text when it does not. The learner must locate the actual supporting passage.

6. Build vocabulary in context

Words are learned more effectively when connected to real sentences and situations.

Use this routine:

  1. Guess the meaning from the sentence.

  2. Ask for an explanation connected to that context.

  3. Check a reliable dictionary or course source.

  4. Compare the word with a related word or common expression.

  5. Write a new sentence.

  6. Check whether the word fits the new context.

Example prompt:

“In this sentence, explain the word ‘significant’ in plain language. Compare it with ‘important’ and show when the words are not interchangeable.”

Keep important subject vocabulary

Simplification should not remove every technical term.

A useful instruction is:

“Explain the sentence in simpler language, but keep the technical terms in parentheses.”

This helps the learner understand the idea while developing the vocabulary needed for the subject.

Check collocations

A collocation is a combination of words that commonly appear together.

For example:

  • make a decision;

  • strong evidence;

  • conduct research;

  • reach a conclusion.

AI can suggest collocations, but important usage should be checked with a reliable dictionary, language corpus, teacher, or course source.

7. Compare translation choices

Translation can support comprehension and language development when learners compare choices rather than copy a generated version.

First identify the purpose:

  • Do I need basic understanding?

  • Am I learning the language?

  • Is the text formal or informal?

  • Does it contain technical terms?

  • Is tone important?

  • Is more than one interpretation possible?

A useful process is:

  1. Translate a short passage or sentence yourself.

  2. Ask AI for an alternative.

  3. Compare important choices.

  4. Check specialised terms.

  5. Decide which wording best fits the purpose.

  6. Explain the final choices.

Use a comparison table:

The most fluent translation is not always the most accurate.

Machine translation may:

  • flatten tone;

  • remove ambiguity;

  • miss cultural meaning;

  • choose the wrong technical term;

  • make an uncertain statement sound definite.

When possible, check important choices using dictionaries, parallel texts, subject sources, or a person with relevant language knowledge.

8. Use writing feedback without replacement

AI can help a learner examine writing without taking over authorship.

Useful support may:

  • identify where an argument becomes unclear;

  • point to a missing connection;

  • ask questions;

  • identify where evidence is needed;

  • offer two limited wording options;

  • compare the text with supplied criteria.

Example:

“Using the assignment criteria below, identify one passage where a reader may lose my argument. Explain why and ask one question that would help me revise it. Do not rewrite the paragraph.”

Feedback versus replacement

Feedback:

  • identifies a specific issue;

  • refers to evidence or criteria;

  • explains why the issue matters;

  • leaves revision decisions to the learner.

Replacement:

  • rewrites entire passages;

  • changes the argument without explanation;

  • removes the learner’s voice;

  • produces language the learner cannot explain or defend.

The learner should record important changes and explain why they accepted, adapted, or rejected AI suggestions.

9. Check permissions and demonstrate learning

Reading and language tasks may involve:

  • copyrighted material;

  • licensed course texts;

  • personal writing;

  • teacher feedback;

  • confidential information;

  • assessed work.

Before uploading material, ask:

  • Am I permitted to share this text with the tool?

  • Do I need the entire text, or only a short relevant excerpt?

  • Does the material contain personal or confidential information?

  • Do course rules permit this kind of assistance?

  • Must AI use be disclosed?

  • Have I cited the source correctly?

Do not upload complete books or private documents merely for convenience. Follow the relevant school, course, copyright, and platform rules.

Copyright and responsible creation will be explored more fully in Lesson 17.

Demonstrate learning through a fresh task

After AI-supported work, complete a new task using the same reading or language skill.

Examples:

  • explain a different paragraph in your own words;

  • answer a new inferential question;

  • use vocabulary in a new sentence;

  • translate a similar sentence and justify the choices;

  • revise another paragraph using the same criterion;

  • identify evidence for a new claim.

Use reduced AI assistance and any normally permitted accessibility support.

The purpose is not to remove fair accommodations. It is to check that AI is not supplying the comprehension, interpretation, wording, or answer being assessed.

Classroom activity: Active text and language study

Choose a permitted source-text excerpt of approximately 400–800 words.

Step 1: Set a reading purpose

Write what you want to understand, identify, or evaluate.

Step 2: Preview the text

Examine the title, headings, structure, captions, and highlighted terms.

Write one prediction and two questions.

Step 3: Read and annotate

Read the source in manageable chunks.

Write brief annotations in your own words.

Step 4: Retrieve and summarise

Hide the source and write a short summary from memory.

Reopen the source and correct omissions, distortions, or unsupported additions.

Step 5: Use text-grounded questions

Ask AI for:

  • one literal question;

  • one inferential question;

  • one critical question.

Answer each question and identify supporting evidence in the source.

Step 6: Choose one language activity

Choose one:

  • vocabulary in context;

  • translation comparison;

  • writing feedback.

Record what AI suggested and what you accepted, changed, or rejected.

Step 7: Check the output

Compare AI output with the source text.

Use an appropriate dictionary, course source, or other language reference when needed.

Step 8: Complete a fresh task

Complete a similar reading or language task with reduced AI help and normally permitted accommodations.

  • what the fresh task showed;

  • what support you may still need.

Key vocabulary

Source text:
The article, chapter, excerpt, transcript, or other material being studied.

Reading purpose:
A reason for reading that directs attention.

Preview:
Examining structure and available information before detailed reading.

Annotation:
A brief note, question, connection, or paraphrase made while reading.

Retrieval:
Recalling information before looking at the source again.

Summary:
A shorter account of the main ideas in a source.

Text-grounded question:
A question connected to evidence in a specific passage.

Literal question:
A question about what the source states directly.

Inferential question:
A question about a reasonable conclusion drawn from clues in the source.

Critical question:
A question about the strength, relevance, completeness, or limitations of the source’s support.

Vocabulary in context:
Learning a word through how it is used in a real sentence or situation.

Collocation:
Words that commonly appear together.

Translation comparison:
Examining alternative translations and explaining differences in meaning, tone, or suitability.

Voice:
The learner’s own style, reasoning, and authorship in writing.

Summary

In Week 10, we learned how AI can support reading and language without replacing meaningful engagement with the source text.

Before reading, set a purpose and preview honestly.

During reading, work in manageable chunks, annotate in your own words, and request focused support when needed.

After reading, retrieve the main ideas, compare summaries with the source, and ask literal, inferential, and critical questions.

AI can also support vocabulary, translation, and writing feedback. But learners must check what AI changed or added, follow permissions and course rules, and retain control of final choices.

The goal is not to remove every support tool.

The goal is stronger reading, language awareness, and authorship—with AI assistance that remains visible, limited, and open to checking.
